Family Therapy That Brings You Closer Together

Families are complex, beautiful, and sometimes deeply challenging. Whether your family is navigating conflict, communication struggles, a major life transition, or the impact of a mental health concern, family therapy provides a structured and compassionate space to work through it together.

At Tri-State Psychotherapy Group, our family therapists understand that every family has its own unique dynamic, history, and set of needs. We work with families of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to foster understanding, rebuild trust, and create healthier patterns that benefit every member of the household.

You're probably feeling

Unsure How to Move Forward Together

When a major life change or crisis has left your family feeling lost and uncertain, we help you navigate the path ahead with unity, resilience, and renewed purpose.

How Family Therapy Can Help Your Household

Every family that walks through our doors or joins us virtually arrives with a different story. Some families are dealing with the aftermath of a significant loss or trauma. Others are struggling with a child’s behavioral challenges, a teenager pulling away, or the tension that comes with blending two families into one. Some simply feel like the lines of communication have broken down and don’t know how to find their way back to each other.

At Tri-State Psychotherapy Group, our therapists are trained in evidence-based family therapy approaches including Structural Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and systems-based interventions that look at the family as a whole rather than placing the burden of change on any one individual. This perspective is powerful because when one person in a family struggles, the entire family feels it. And when the entire family heals, every individual within it benefits.

No matter what has brought your family to therapy, we meet you with compassion, patience, and a genuine commitment to helping your household become a place of greater safety, connection, and love.

What to Expect in Family Therapy

Beginning family therapy can feel like a big step especially when emotions are already running high at home. At Tri-State Psychotherapy Group, our therapists are skilled at creating a calm, balanced environment where every family member feels safe to speak honestly and be genuinely heard.

In your first session, your therapist will take the time to understand your family’s history, the challenges you are currently facing, and what each person hopes to gain from the process. From there, a tailored plan is developed that addresses your family’s specific dynamics and goals not a generic template, but a real strategy built around your unique situation.

Sessions typically involve the family as a whole, though your therapist may occasionally meet with individuals or smaller groups within the family depending on what is most helpful at a given stage. We offer both in-person sessions at our New York and Massachusetts locations and secure telehealth appointments, making it easy for families with busy schedules to stay consistent with their care.

Family therapy is not about pointing fingers or revisiting every past grievance. It is about helping each person feel seen, building bridges where walls have formed, and giving your family the tools to communicate, connect, and move forward in a healthier way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Therapy

We know that deciding to bring your family into therapy can raise a lot of questions and sometimes a little apprehension. At Tri-State Psychotherapy Group, we want every member of your family to feel informed, comfortable, and genuinely welcome before the first session even begins. Here are some of the questions families ask us most often.

This depends on your family’s unique situation and goals. In most cases, family therapy works best when all members of the household participate but that is not always possible or appropriate. Your therapist will work with you to determine who should be involved and when. In some cases, sessions may begin with just one or two family members and expand over time as trust and comfort grow. There is no rigid formula only what works best for your family.

Never. One of the most important roles of a family therapist is to remain neutral and ensure that every voice in the room is treated with equal respect and care. At Tri-State Psychotherapy Group, our therapists are trained to facilitate balanced conversations where no one feels ganged up on or overlooked. The goal is always to help the family as a whole not to assign blame or validate one perspective over another.

It is not uncommon for a family member especially a teenager to be resistant to therapy. If this happens, we encourage you to start without them. Family therapy can still be enormously valuable even if every member is not present, and sometimes seeing the positive changes in the rest of the family is what eventually brings a reluctant member on board. Our therapists are also experienced in helping families navigate resistance with patience and without pressure.

Yes. Tri-State Psychotherapy Group offers secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions that make it easy for families to attend therapy together even from different locations. Whether family members are at home, at college, or simply unable to travel to one of our offices, virtual sessions ensure that distance never has to be a barrier to healing. We have locations in New York and Massachusetts and are proud to serve families across both states.
